In the cauldron, the victim was put under a huge cauldron with a tin box full of mice strapped on her belly. The cauldron was then heated and the mice in their agony ate their way into the victim’s body to escape. The sachentage was a collar lined with spikes so the victim would not lie down to sleep. Boiling to death, either in oil or water, is said to have originated with Henry VIII of England, who had a cook boiled alive for having poisoned 2 nobles. Later the same punishment was used for counterfeiters and for treason. The prisoner was often dunked up and down in the pot several times by means of a pulley to prolong the agony.
Boiling to death is a very old form of execution. We find it repeatedly referred to in ancient literature. The modus operandi was simple. A huge cauldron or other receptacle containing water, oil or tallow was heated until it reached boiling-point, and into this the victim was pitched, as often as not head first. Or, if the executioners wished to prolong the agony of their victim, the contents of the cauldron were brought gradually to boiling-point, while the individual, bound hand and foot, was covered, except for the head, with the fluid. The frying-pan method varied little from boiling, except that, in this case, the victim was placed in a large shallow receptacle or dish containing oil, tallow or pitch and fried alive. A variation of this procedure was where a gridiron or metal platform was used, under which a fire was lighted.
