In Italy, especially among the Abruzzi, the peasants fear “la Strega chi succia il sangue.” A mother will see her child pine and waste away, and is at her wits’ end how to relieve him. She goes to the priest who recites the Holy Gospel over the poor child upon whose head he has laid the broad spade of his stole: she returns home and hangs over the doorway a croos of wax which has beenb blessed on Ascension Day. She takes a pinch of salt, ties it up in a little linen bag, and hangs this amulet round her child’s neck. She cuts off a lock of the sick lad’s hair and burns it that the smoke may drive the witch far afield. She sprinkles the hinges of the doors with Holy Water and recites aloud the Credo thrice. Then the husband “does the 7 nights,” that is to say he watches for 7 long nights. Perhaps he may catch the hag and be able to seize her fast by her hair.
At midnight the witch anoints her body with the magic salve, she mounts upon a huge he-goat and cries: “Away, away, through snow and storm, carry me to the nut-tree of Benevento.” As she is on her way to the sabbat she passes through the houses sucking the blood of the little children, and the babies pine and pine die at last. Perhaps in some cottage the father, supremely anxious for his babe is “doing the 7 nights.” An earthen pot turn upside down shrouds a bright light. There in the dark the father takes his stand. If he can but prick the witch with a pin, however gently, she will be discovered. The watcher hears a noise. He quickly uncovers the light. The witch has already fed.
At earliest dawn he goes in search of a wise woman, and begs her to tell him how he may rescue his child from the imminent danger. He is instructed to kill a dog or a cat and lay the body behind the house door. The witch cannot enter unless she has first counted every hair on the dead animal, and whilst she is at her task dawn wil break. Then must she fly to her own place, for if she tarry until sunrise she will not be able to escape, and she will be discovered stark naked in the village street.
