The accused, it was said, had paid homage to the Devil, made pact with him, and offered him the osculum infame. They sacrificed black cats and first-born children (sometimes their own) to him. Afterward they cooked the children in order to obtain ingredients for their magic powders. The Devil forbade them to kiss the cross or make the sign of the cross, to adore the host, or to go to mass. To demonstrate their pure loyalty to him, they must trample upon the cross. Sometimes he places a mark on his followers.**** The witches of Dauphine constituted a sect, and they assembled at sabbats, usually on Thursdays, but sometimes on Tuesdays or Saturdays. They were transported to the sabbat by the Devil over long distances, often riding upon black horses, red mares, or stick they had anointed in order to cause them to levitate.
At the sabbat, the witches danced, held sexual orgies, and frequently had intercourse with demons or even with the Devil himself. Though the appearance of the Devil at the witches’ revels had theretofore been hinted at, it only now in the 15th century was clearly and consistently assumed. In Dauphine, he appeared to his worshipers as a black cat or as a man with terrible, shining eyes, wearing a crown and black garments. There he received the witches’ homage and sexual favors. If the witches were arrested, he would visit them in prison to strengthen them against the efforts of the Inquisitors or, if all else had failed, to help them commit suicide and so escape execution.
These Dauphine trials encouraged the expansion of the concept of witchcraft in the succeeding period, during which classical witchcraft would be defined.
*The idea that the Devil or demons could be conjured by the name of god is very old. It was considered one of the most effective, if one of the most blasphemous, ways of doing so.
