The weak-minded might be burned as witches, or hanged-like the teenage servant, Thomas Granger(1625-1642) of Duxbury-for having carnally abused a mare, a cow, 2 goats, 5 sheep, 2 calves, and a turkey. And a petty criminal, innocent for once but harried beyond the bounds of reason, might be put to death because one piglet in a sows litter had a human look about it, as well as “one eye blemished just like his….which occasioning him to be suspected, he confessed.”
August 10, 1580 George Schorpff of Ermb, near the Hohenstein, a lecher, guilty of beastliness with 4 cows, 2 calves, and a sheep. Beheaded for unnartural vice at Velln, and afterwards burnt together with a cow.
During the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, authorities began active prosecution of homosexuality, and sodomy, and bestiality, too, became a matter for capital enforcement. In the 15th century trial records of Marjoca, several people were executed for the crime (no longer just sin) of bestiality and by 1534, bestiality had become a capital crim in England and Sweden. Through the 17th century, there were a number of executions of both humans and animals for the crime.
If a man committed bestiality, both he and the animal were burned. In 1466, a man and a sow were burned together in Paris. In 1606, in Loens de Chartres, a man was hanged together with his pet bitch, although the dog received the saving grace of being stunned with a hammer. Cotton Mather describes the death of a Mr. Potter in New haven, Connecticut, who in 1662 kept a harem of a cow, 2 heifers, 3 sheep, and 2 sows. His harem were first hanged before his eyes, a sight that reduced Potter to tears, and then Potter suffered the same fate.
